infoConsistent with President Barack Obama’s administration's strategy for stemming illegal immigration to focusing on employers who hire illegal workers in the enforcement, as we first reported to you a few months ago, US immigration officers from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) handed out “Notices of Inspection” to 625 businesses last Wednesday nationwide, as the official notification to those businesses of the agency’s plans to audit their employment eligibility and identification verification documents, known as Form I-9 compliance.

Form I-9 is used to verify an employee’s personal identification as well as employment eligibility. Under the law, all US employers are required to complete Form I-9 upon hiring of all employees and keep the I-9 forms updated and the employers must check the authenticity of documents provided by the employee.

According to the release by the Homeland Security Department, only a total of 503 such notices were issued to businesses nationwide last year but a batch of 625 of them were issued last week.  The agency did not release any names or locations of the businesses which received the notification for audit because they are part of the ongoing investigations.

If you have any questions regarding From I-9 compliance or wish to conduct a self-audit internally to ensure full compliance of the laws, please send your questions or request to This email address is being protected from spambots.
